History and Heritage

The West End Cemetery Association, Incorporated, was organized and chartered in June, 1924.
A three acre site had been made available seven years prior to this date by the M. C. McDonald, Sr. family. By 1924 approximately 16 graves were already occupying the site.
The original directors were, in addition to M. C. McDonald, Sr., S. W. Wilson, J. E. Jackson, F. W. VonCanon, and Fred B. Monroe, Sr. This board created a charter that existed until 1945.
In June of 1945, having recognized that the original charter needed revisions, there was a reorganization and a new charter was created. This charter changed the name to West End Cemetery, Incorporated. The directors were M. C. McDonald, Jr., J. B VonCanon, Jr., Dr. Clement Monroe, and Fred B. Monroe, Sr. Additional land was donated by the VonCanon family and the McDonald family in order to expand the site.
Under the provision of the charter, additional directors have served on the board including Allan McDonald, Lee Sutphin, Earl Auman, Lamar Pusser, Fred B. Monroe, Jr., James Rector, and Priscilla Ritter Cole. Fred B. Monroe, Sr. served on the board of directors for nearly 60 years.

News

The Board of Directors recently applied for a grant to WRAL/Capitol Broadcasting in Raleigh for their annual azalea give away. We were awarded the grant, and we received 60 azaleas. A local American Heritage Girls troop used this as an opportunity for a community service project. Meagan Dwyer, one of the troop members, organized the girls and parents of her troop. On Saturday, September 25 2022, the azaleas were picked up in Raleigh. The volunteers spent the afternoon planting the azaleas under the direction of local landscapers.
